From One Chair to a California Brand: Why We Built Freebird Barbershop

When Freebird Barbershop opened, the goal wasn't to become the biggest barbershop in San Diego.
It was to build the kind of barbershop we'd want to visit ourselves.
A place where conversations weren't rushed.
Where consultations mattered.
Where craftsmanship came before speed.
And where every client walked out feeling like they had a haircut designed specifically for them—not just another fade with a different guard number.
Today, hundreds of clients later, that philosophy continues to shape everything we do.
The dream has grown, too.
Our vision is to build Freebird into a California barbershop brand—one neighborhood at a time—without ever sacrificing the personal experience that got us here.
Every Great Barbershop Starts With One Client
People often ask what makes a barbershop successful.
It's not the chairs.
It's not the logo.
It's not even the haircut.
It's trust.
One client tells a friend.
That friend brings a coworker.
Someone moves across town and still comes back every month because they haven't found another barber who understands their hair.
That's how great neighborhood barbershops grow.
Not through hype.
Through consistency.
What Our Clients Notice First
When we read through our Google reviews, a few themes appear over and over again.
People don't just talk about the haircut.
They talk about the experience.
One client wrote:
"He really takes into consideration the type of hair you have and what your goals and desires are."
That's exactly how we think a haircut should begin.
Not with clippers.
With questions.
More Than Just Fades
Modern barbering has become heavily focused on fades.
We love a clean fade.
But we also believe a great barber should be comfortable cutting every kind of hair.
Medium-length styles.
Long hair.
Thick hair.
Curly hair.
Classic tapers.
Textured crops.
Modern mullets.
One client summed it up perfectly:
"If you're looking for a great men's barber that isn't limited to just clippers and fades... Chase knows how to get down with some scissors and knows style."
That review means a lot to us because it captures exactly what we're trying to build.
Every Haircut Is Different
One of our favorite reviews simply says:
"I need a mullet. A dang good mullet. And he NAILED it."
It's funny.
But it also says something important.
No two clients walk through our doors wanting the same haircut.
Our job isn't to repeat one style all day.
It's to understand the person sitting in the chair.
Why We Believe Consultation Is Part of the Haircut
A haircut starts before the cape goes on.
We ask questions like:
How do you style your hair?
How much time do you want to spend getting ready?
Are you growing it out?
Do you surf?
Do you wear a hat every day?
Those answers change the haircut.
Another client shared:
"Showed up as a first timer and Chase was easy to talk to about specifics of my hair style and killed it! Quick with the cut but was gentle with the clippers and shears. Going to be a regular moving forward."
That combination—listening first, cutting second—is something we never want to lose.
Our goal isn't simply to open more locations.
It's to create a barbershop people trust.
If Freebird grows across California, we want every location to feel like the original.
Clean.
Welcoming.
No egos.
No rushing.
Just skilled barbers who genuinely care about their craft.
Growth only matters if the experience stays the same.

Giving Back to the Community
San Diego has one of the largest military communities in America.
That's why we're proud to offer 25% off haircuts for active-duty military, veterans, retired military, and first responders.
It's one of the most generous military haircut discounts available in Pacific Beach and a small way for us to thank the people who serve our country and community.
Pacific Beach Will Always Be Home
No matter how much Freebird grows, Pacific Beach is where our story started.
It's where we learned our clients value conversation as much as craftsmanship.
It's where we've built relationships with surfers, professionals, students, military members, and longtime locals.
And it's where we'll continue refining our craft every single day.
This Is Just the Beginning
Every great company starts with a single idea.
Ours was simple:
Create a barbershop where people leave looking better than they expected—and feeling better than when they walked in.
Everything else has grown from that.
The reviews.
The returning clients.
The new shop.
The vision for California.
We're incredibly grateful for every person who's trusted us with their hair, recommended us to a friend, or left a review online.
You're helping build something much bigger than a barbershop.
You're helping build Freebird.
